TrackingPoint GUN Linux: The Penguin That Kills

Since TrackingPoint at CES 2013, a lot has changed at the Austin, Linux-based weapons company. The company calls them “Precision Guided Firearms,” or PGFs. But to give you an idea of what TrackingPoint can do, photojournalist Steven Michael hit a target at 1,008 meters on his first try, and he’d never held a gun in his hands before. Putting computer technology in the hands of soldiers is nothing new. But this time, it’s got new products.

The big guns the company showed off at CES 2013 were just the beginning. Last month, Arstechnica reporters visited Austin’s Liberty Hill to check out TrackingPoint’s new TP AR 556 and TP AR 762. Unlike the heavy-duty XS-series guns shown off at CES 2013, the new PGFs are very easy-to-use semi-automatics.

The weapons feature ARM processors, lasers, and Wi-Fi support. Their price tag is quite steep so far, but they certainly haven't gone unnoticed by governments.

The company's CEO Jason Schauble stated:

“We’ve sold out everything.” The build time on some of the XS PGFs has dropped to one to two weeks, but each gun contains a complex mix of components from multiple manufacturers. Linux runs on seven different processors, including a TI DaVinci SoC. The semi-automatic AR guns come from completely different suppliers than the ones we’ve been using so far, and the result is that they can juggle.
