The Nokia-Microsoft has already been approved by the US Department of Justice, while it has also received the "green light" from the European Commission and the regulatory authorities of 15 other countries.
Nokia and Microsoft announced that the acquisition of the former by the latter, for the sum of 7.2 billion dollars, will not be completed by the end of March, as initially announced .
Conversely, the Finnish company expects that the acquisition of the mobile phone division and related services will be completed by the end of April. The reason for the postponement of the acquisition completion date is said to be the approval delay by certain Asian regulatory authorities.
In a similar vein, Microsoft's related announcement was made, which assures the public that the acquisition process is ongoing and is expected to be completed by the end of the coming month.
We remind that the agreement has already been approved by the U.S. Department of Justice, and it has also received the “green light” from the European Commission and the regulatory authorities of 15 additional countries. However, because the two companies have production facilities and subsidiaries in several Asian countries, approval from the regulatory authorities there is also considered necessary. Nevertheless, the number of expected approvals has not been disclosed.
The acquisition of Nokia's devices and services division by Microsoft was announced last September. A significant role in the process was played by the then head of Nokia, Stephen Elop, who had previously also been an executive at Microsoft. In fact, after Ballmer's resignation from Microsoft, Elop was considered the most likely replacement candidate, but ultimately, the CEO of Microsoft was appointed Satya Nadella.
Ultimately, Stephen Elop took over the Devices and Studios division at Microsoft, i.e., the division that Nokia will become part of after the acquisition is completed. In practice, it means he will have the same responsibilities he had when he led the Finnish company. The main difference is that he will now also be responsible for other Microsoft products, such as Surface tablets and Xbox consoles.
With the acquisition, Microsoft hopes to give a new boost to the smartphones division, as it will be able to offer its own devices in combination with the Windows Phone operating system.
