The first Firefox OS devices will begin to be released to the market no later than this week around the world, from various mobile carriers.
Mozilla today announced regional releases of various Firefox OS devices, confirming that the first versions will hit retail this week.
The first devices to be released in Europe will be the ZTE Open and Alcatel One Touch Fire from Deutsche Telekom and Telefónica, respectively.
“Smartphones should be more open. Consumers should not have a locked-down system, but should have the option to change their devices. This week marks a turning point in the mobile industry, as we have already started shipping the first Firefox OS devices in Spain. This is just the beginning as we will bring Firefox OS to more and more smartphones,” said José María Álvarez-Pallete, Chief Operating Officer of Telefónica.
