MasterCard announced the expansion of its facial recognition, pay-by-selfie technology to 14 countries this summer!
In October, MasterCard announced the creation of a new payment method based on an authentication application that allows users to make financial transactions using their face.
The company wants to increase security using biometric technology and improve the user experience by making it easy to authenticate for common tasks like payments.

MasterCard’s president of security solutions, Ajay Bhalla, said: “As the world becomes increasingly digital, this will be the next wave of technology that will transform the user experience in digital markets. Pay -by-selfie is simple to use, the customer only needs to download the Identity Check app! When a merchant requires user identification before making a purchase, the customer will receive a push notification on their mobile and then all they have to do is take a selfie to approve the purchase!
MasterCard conducted tests in several countries before introducing this technology and now considers it ripe to be introduced in a strategic market like Britain!
The technology will drastically reduce identity fraud by making it harder for hackers to capture images of victims without user interaction. The company is proud to have reduced the chances of an attack since customers will not be relying on entering passwords that can be easily stolen by fraudsters

A possible attack scenario is to infect a mobile phone and steal a selfie from it, which the attacker secretly submits when a transaction needs to be approved. Such malware would need access to the camera, local storage, and applications, and would need the ability to monitor push notifications.
MasterCard is investing in biometric authentication, including voice and iris recognition technology. More advanced studies are pushing toward using heart rate via a connected bracelet.
According to Fortune, other banks are also introducing biometric technology to improve customer security. HSBC is working on voice recognition and touch authentication, and Barclays introduced voice recognition in 2013.
