Apple has uploaded the entire first episode of the dystopian sci-fi TV series “Silo” to Twitter, allowing anyone on the platform to watch it for free. The move comes three days before the streaming service airs the series’ season finale.

The Silo, which was recently renewed for a second season, became the most-watched show for the week of May 27-June 2, beating out the competition with demand that was 24.4 times the series average, according to data from Parrot Analytics. The series is about a toxic future where a community lives in an underground silo. The series is based on the science fiction novel “Wool” by American author Hugh Howey.

The move is a way for Apple to drum up excitement for one of its popular series by letting people watch it for free, in the hopes that they'll stick around and sign up for an Apple TV+ subscription. The marketing tactic, which has previously been used for “The Afterparty,” isn't new, as networks have done the same in the past by uploading pilot episodes to YouTube.
Since Twitter recently started allowing subscribers to upload longer videos, Apple is choosing to take advantage of the social network's new feature by promoting its series ahead of the season finale. Apple could start something of a trend with this move, as we may start to see other companies follow suit.
The series for Apple TV+ is produced by AMC Studios and executive produced by Howey, Ferguson, series creator and showrunner Graham Yost, Nina Jack, Fred Golan, Rémi Aubuchon, Ingrid Escajeda and Morten Tyldum, who directed the first three episodes.
