An uproar has erupted in China over some textbooks that contain "racist" and "pornographic" illustrations.
The state-owned Chinese educational publisher People's Education Press was forced to recall a series of primary school math textbooks after really angry comments were made on social media.

Some images showed little boys with male genitalia (like the image above) and another showed a girl's underwear.
Chinese state media outlet Global Times confirmed that controversial art in textbooks will be redesigned and a "full evaluation of all published textbooks" will be launched.

The publisher publicly apologized on Chinese social media platform Sina Weibo following the backlash, stating that he felt a deep sense of guilt.
The People's Education Press promised to "adhere to the correct political direction, promote excellent Chinese culture , and conform to the aesthetic tastes of the general public."
The images caused a storm on social media – they were trending on Sina Weibo for several days.

Whatsonweibo editor-in-chief, Manya Koetse, revealed that the hashtag “People's Education Press Math Teaching Material” had over 860 million views.
The drawings were criticized for showing little boys with bulges in their pants, boys grabbing girls, and a misshapen Chinese flag. One boy appeared to have a tattoo on his ankle, and a girl appeared in a bunny-style outfit. Some children wore clothing with the U.S. , which was criticized on social media.
"These images are not suitable for a child's development," one parent wrote on social media.
