New York orders 184 Mustang Mach-E cars for police and government use

New York City has purchased 184 all-electric Mustang Mach-Es, all of which will be used for law enforcement and emergency response purposes. As Electrek noted, the move is part of the city’s plans to purchase more than 1,250 electric vehicles by 2022. This, in turn, is part of a broader effort to “drastically reduce climate emissions across the city” with the help of a $420 million investment.

In its announcement, the New York City government said the Mustang Mach-E will be used by the New York Police Department (NYPD), New York City Sheriff's Office, Department of Corrections, Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Environmental Protection, New York City Emergency Management, Police DCAS and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. They will replace these agencies' natural gas-powered vehicles after the city takes delivery of them by June 30, 2022.

NYC also said the Mustang Mach-E purchase is part of the largest electric vehicle purchase to date, though that may not be the case for long. The city has also approved the option to purchase up to 250 Tesla Model 3 vehicles at any time over the next five years.

Earlier this month, Ford announced it is increasing production of the Mach-E to 200,000 vehicles annually in the U.S. by 2022 and in Europe by 2023. The company's CEO Jim Farley said there is huge demand for the electric vehicle, and Ford is reportedly delaying the Explorer and Aviator EVs to ensure it can build enough Mach-Es to meet demand.
