RSA Asia: Pop star and activist Sir Bob Geldof hates Pokemon Go, Facebook and Twitter, and says he has never bought anything online. He still uses an ancient Nokia 3100, so he doesn't have to worry about his online security.
The Irish pop star was in Singapore during the closing ceremony of the RSA security conference.
He stated that digital lives are a distraction from humanity's mission that gives space to "idiots" like Democratic presidential candidate Donald Trump, to far-right anti-immigration parties, and to bring prosperity to the poor.
“I have absolutely no need for any cybersecurity because of this device,” Sir Bob told the conference attendees, showing off his ancient silver Nokia.
“… People are fed up with nonsense like Pokemon Go, for fuck's sake.”
Sir Bob Geldof has said he is “very disappointed and saddened” by Brexit, and that he fears the rise of nationalist and far-right leaders.
On the other hand, he praised technology's ability to transmit prosperity, but pointed out the huge gap in education and meaningful access between Westerners and the developing world, urging policymakers to think about how IT could help alleviate poverty.
Bob had flown to Singapore after a gig with the Boomtown Rats at the Brentwood Festival in the UK.
The acclaimed artist certainly added a unique, more human touch to the RSA security conference.
