NASA: It's a rare meeting of two of the most beautiful phenomena on Earth. It's the meeting of the sunrise and the northern lights, over the northeastern coast of the American continent.
The video was recorded last Thursday by NASA Barry "Butch" Wilmore, while they were in orbit over the states of Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts, on the east coast of the US.
Both the Northern and Southern Auroras are most frequently observed along a zone whose center is approximately 10 degrees from the poles. While directly above the Poles they appear much less frequently.
Its color depends on which gas – oxygen or nitrogen – is produced by the electrons. It also depends on how fast the electrons are moving.
