Google's latest artificial intelligence program can figure out exactly where any photo was taken just by looking at it!
The program, called PlaNet, has been trained to identify locations based on details in a photo by examining over 90 million geotagged images from the Internet. This means, for example, that PlaNet can determine that a photo was taken in Paris because it recognizes the Eiffel Tower. But most people can do that too! What makes PlaNet special is that it uses deep learning techniques to identify photo locations without any known landmarks but from random streets and houses.

The team behind PlaNet, led by engineer Tobias Weyand, tested the program by taking 2.3 million geotagged images from Flickr without providing the program with the geographic data. PlaNet was able to correctly guess the location of the photos with a success rate of 3.6% at the street level, 10.1% at the city level, 28.4% at the country level, and 48% at the continent level.

Weyand and his colleagues then pitted PlaNet against 10 well-traveled humans, and the program fared much better, winning 28 out of 50 games played. The score may not have been high, but when Google's program was wrong, it was always closer to the location than when humans were wrong.
However, there was no indication from the researchers about how Google plans to implement PlaNet in practice and develop it! We may find out soon!
