Samsung appears to be working on a smartwatch that doesn't need to be synced with a smartphone in order to function.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the manufacturer in South Korea is in talks with various telecommunications entities that will turn the device into a phone. Users will be able to make calls directly from the device while holding the wrist close to the mouth.
Smartwatches have long been touted as the next big thing in information technology, with strong growth in 2014 and beyond. While most people in the market currently have to be tethered to a smartphone to receive phone calls, send text messages, check email and use other functions, Samsung has its sights set on creating a smartwatch that doesn't need a smartphone to do the same.
The watch – phone will run on Samsung's operating system, Tizen for SmartWatch. It remains unclear what the product will be called.
Samsung's first entry into the SmartWatch market was made with the Galaxy Gear device in a rough start, but the second generation of the Gear 2 is lighter, slimmer and more powerful – in general, it performs better than the previous model.
The watch – phone is expected to launch in June or July.
