Apple tops problematic operating systems

Some believe that the operating system with the highest number of reported vulnerabilities is Windows 7 or Windows in general, which is not the case, according to data from the 2014 NVD database, where Apple holds the first place.

According to the database, or more precisely, Christian Florian at the GFI Blog who analyzed the data, Apple's Mac OS Xis at the top of the vulnerability chart, with 147 vulnerabilities, of which 64 had a high severity rating and 67 of them had a medium severity rating.

The second place is occupied by the same company's iOS operating system with 127 security vulnerabilities and the third place is the Linux Kernel with 119 reports. Microsoft Windows Server 2008 fills the remaining 7 empty spots in the top ten, with 38 reports of vulnerabilities.

Although it's a bit strange that Windows isn't at the top of the list, the Windows versions are listed individually, while Mac OS X, Linux, and iOS are all together.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer is the top vulnerable application with a total of 242 vulnerabilities reported for the Internet browser, 220 of which are rated high severity. Google Chrome is in second place and Mozilla Firefox is in third place, ahead of Java and Flash Player .

What is definitely missing from the data is the amount of time it took each company to release patches for its applications to fix the reported problems and provide security to users' computers.
