Montblanc e-Strap: 2015 will be the year of the SmartWatch, as traditional watch manufacturers try to cope with new competition.
Montblanc, for example, has come up with a new way to turn “dumb” watches into smartwatches, according to aBlogtoWatch: an e-strap that turns a non-smartwatch into one that can receive notifications and messages. The new gadget vibrates every time a notification comes in.
The strap is made of leather, but has a screen that sits under your wrist, and connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth 4.0 (aka Bluetooth Smart). This allows it to pull notifications directly onto the OLED touchscreen, with a resolution of 128×36 pixels.
The e-strap also works in the gym, allowing users to track steps, calories burned and sync their data to a smartphone app.
Experts in the luxury watch industry believe that many consumers don't really want a high-end smartwatch, but instead, prefer an opt-in smart component, such as the e-strap.
The e-strap costs $300. It should be noted here that many of Montblanc's watches cost around $3,000.
