Facebook's new data center will run entirely on wind energy

fbdatacentermainIn a post, Facebook announced through Data Center Energy Manager, Vincent Van Son, that the new data center being built in Iowa will be powered exclusively by wind energy.

The energy, amounting to 138 MW, will be drawn from a nearby wind farm.

This is the fourth data center to follow the same renewable energy policy after those in Oregon and North Carolina in the US and Luleå in Sweden.

The center being prepared in Altoona , Iowa, will draw energy from a farm located 100 kilometers north in an area famous for the high winds that blow throughout its area.

Facebook has committed to ensuring that 25% of the total energy it consumes for its data centers comes from renewable energy sources by 2015.

It seems that more and more technology giants like Microsoft and Google are turning to similar, environmentally friendly energy solutions.

The facilities, photos of which you can see below, are scheduled to be operational in 2015.
